CITI Program Training

The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program) is dedicated to serving the training and compliance needs of colleges and universities, as they foster integrity and professional advancement of their learners.

Through OSPRA, the University subscribes to these courses, and they are made available to the UDM community free of charge. The Conflict of Interest course and discipline specific required courses are available for biomedical, social & behavioral research, the physical sciences, humanities, engineers, and administrators.

The CITI Programs Conflict of Interest course is required for all UDM members seeking any form of research or program funding (grant, subaward, contract, UDMPU Faculty Research Award, etc.).

The courses can be completed over several sessions. Quizzes are given following the reading material. When the required modules are successfully completed, a Course Completion Report is available for printing.

How to Get Started

Go to www.citiprogram.org. Select “Register.”

  • Type “University of Detroit Mercy” into the blank for your organization.
  • Create your own username and password. On the first page, select “add a course.” Six questions will appear.
  • For Question 1, select from six Learner groups:
    1. Dental/Nursing/Biomedical
    2. Social/Behavioral Researchers
    3. IRB Expert
    4. Students conducting no more than minimal risk research
    5. Archive/Records/Specimens
    6. Educational/pedagogical research
  • Most research studies will fit under Social/Behavioral, referring to surveys and other studies of behavior, including many that are conducted in medical settings. If you are planning to conduct a study with investigational medications or other experimental treatments, however, the biomedical course would be appropriate. The pedagogical/educational research course is for studies that are likely to be exempt (please note that these projects must still be submitted to the IRB. The determination for an exemption is made by the IRB Chair).
When in doubt, discuss your curriculum with the IRB Chair.
  • Question 2 pertains to the Refresher Course, available after the Basic Course
  • Question 3 asks if you would like to take the IRB Chair course. Select “Not at this time.”
  • Question 4 pertains to the “Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Course. This course is required for all students (postdoc, graduate, and undergraduate) working on NSF funded projects, as well as all personnel funded by NIH Institutional Research Training Grants, Individual Fellowship Awards, Career Development Awards (Institutional and Individual), Research Education Grants, Dissertation Research Grants, or other NIH grant programs with a training component that requires instruction in RCR as noted in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. Please see: Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) for more information about RCR. Faculty may select “N/A.”
  • Question 5 pertains to the Conflict of Interest mini-course. This course is required for all investigators supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  • Question 6 pertains to Laboratory Animal Welfare. Complete only if you are working with vertebrate animals.

Click “submit,” which will return you to the opening page, where the selected learner group will be listed. Click the title to begin.
